Old One Room Schools: Wisconsin

Origins

I grew up in a small Ohio town, and I rode the school bus from 1st through 12th grades. My bus ride always included a country road on which every school day we saw a one-room brick school house. (SW corner of Stine Rd and Enon-Xenia Pike). As the years went by, I watched this wonderful, familiar friend fall apart. After I married, the school really began to deteriorate. Every time we visited the area I would want to take a photo of the school, but never did. Finally, when we went specifically for the task, the school was gone. It was a huge loss for me and, since that time, whenever we pass a one-room school, it is a joy to stop to take a picture or two. North Of Bailey's Harbor, Wisconsin

At the NW corner of State Highway 57 and German Rd. Possible 2- or 4-room. Converted to a home. Photographed 8/3/21. First photo is looking at the north and east side; school faces east.

"Pioneer School"

Located at 3060 Anderson Lane, Ephraim, WI. Built in 1880. In 1900, due to increase in student load from 60 to 80, the school was lengthened. It closed in 1948. Photographed 8/3/31.

In the photo of the ceiling, look on the right side and you can see a line where the original building ended. In the last photo the air conditioning unit sits right about where the original structure ended.

Lincoln School

This photo was shot through the windshield "on the fly" by Jill, so it isn't sharp. I don't have an exact location, but it is a little bit south of Sturgeon Bay on the west side of Highway 57 (we were northbound). Photographed 8/2/21.

Trenton, WI

About half-way between Beaver Dam and Waupun, WI, on US151, is this old brick school. It was on the Southeast corner of Breezy Point Road, about a mile northeast of County Route A. The fire address of the house next to it said "Town of Trenton W7811" Photos taken on 8/25/10.

The following photos were taken on 8/2/21. Notice the deterioration of the roof.

Prairie Du Chein, WI

This monster probably had more than one room, but ya gotta admit, it is an interesting structure! We shot this school on 11/29/09. It is on US18 on the east side of town.

We visited this school again on 10/22/16. There is now a veterans' memorial in front of it, including with a tank! But I only photographed the school to post here to show the changes in 7 years.

The following photos were taken on 9/25/25; I decided to show some of the Memorial. Notice there is some fixing up of the school since 2016.

Boscobel, WI

Here's an interesting school on US61, two miles south of Boscobel, on the east side of the road. Notice the steeple is in the rear of the building. It was October 2008, and my mom was visiting from Alabama. We were taking her on a trip up to some well-known apple orchards in Gays Mills, and this school was along our route of travel. Sign above the porch says "1864."

Bell School, Near East Troy, WI

On WI SR20 at junction of Bell School Rd, SW corner, east of East Troy a few miles, about 3.5 miles east of I-43. Residence Nicely restored and used as a house.

Near Gratiot, WI

This school still has a swing set out front, and looks to be preserved. On WI SR11 at SW corner of Kingsley Rd, about half way between Gratiot and Shullsberg, one mile east of SR23.

Near Burlington, WI

Again on Wisconsin State Highway 11, this one is on the Southwest corner of North R Street, about 5 miles west of Burlington. This one is a home, and has some additions to the old building.

Near Footville, WI

Our first schools to shoot were all on Wisconsin State Highway 11, as we drove on a trip to Racine on March 31, 2003. We found four schools on this highway. The first school was being used as a house, and it was 1.5 miles east of Footville, 1 mile west of Rock County Road H.
