Elvaston Consolidated School

The huge section on the back of the school was obviously a later addition.  This school is on the east side of Elvaston, IL, south side of US136.

Wards Grove Township, Jo Davies County.

Located about 3 miles east of Stockton, IL, on US20, NE corner of S. Willow Rd/US20 junction.  Built 1857, used for storage.

Waddams Township, Stephenson County

This school is located in Illinois on Cedarville Rd (county route 5), 4.5 miles east of Galena Rd, just east of N. Flansburg Rd on the north side of the road. It has been converted to a home.

Ogden School House, District No.3

Built in 1879. East of Nauvoo, IL on South side of E. County Rd 2300 immediately east of the Old Nauvoo Burial Grounds, facing east.

Nauvoo, IL, High School

Built in 1971, considered to be a 2-room school. Located on the east side of Page St., south of Ripley St.

Campton Township #1, Whitney School

Located at the SW corner of Old Burlington Rd and Wasco Rd in Wasco, IL, north of State Highway 64.  Built in 1852 and served until 1906 when it was consolidated with two other schools to the Wasco Elementary School, a 2-story brick school (demolished and replaced in 1965).  Erica Ruggiero provided the following historical information: "The function of the Whitney schoolhouse between 1906 and the mid-1930s remains unknown. As early as the Great Depression, the schoolhouse had been converted into a residence with two bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, and kitchen area, and it remained as a residence until the 1980s.  Since then, the schoolhouse has sat vacant and has fallen into a state of disrepair. It is the second oldest known and intact one-room schoolhouse in Northeastern Illinois, and the oldest one-room schoolhouse in Kane County and Campton Township.”

Addison Township #3, Churchville Schoolhouse

Located at 3N784 Church Road, a little ways north of Grand Ave., and actually owned by the city of Elmhurst, IL and managed by the Elmhurst Historical Museum.  This school operated from ca.1846 to 1953. The front porch is obviously an addition, as is the whole back section.  It is one of few remaining 1-room schools in Illinois still on its original site.  A history of the school can be found on the Elmhurst History Museum site.

Bishop Hill Colony School

This town was founded as a Swedish Pietist colony.  The school was built in 1861.

Galva

This unknown school is in town.  It is located on 1st NE, North side, just east of Chester St, on south side of the railroad tracks. Looks to have been moved to this location.

Elmira School, Elmira, IL

Southeast of the town of Kewanee is the little hamlet of Elmira.  This worn out school can be found on the north side of state highway 93, just east of Elmira Rd.  Any information about this school would be appreciated.

This next one shows the brick foundation:

This last shot was taken from Elmira Rd so we could see the back has a door (we could see the back door through the front) like the front.  We could not get a view from the north due to trees blocking.

This school is on SR84, just north of the north entrance to the Mississippi Palisades State Park, east side of the road.

Gilson School

Built 1874.  On north side of US150 east of Galesburg, .9 mile east of the junction of I-74.  Appears to be undergoing restoration.

Belden School

Used from 1859 to 1943.  About 6.5 miles east of Galena on U.S. 20 is the entrance to Galena Territory on the north side of the road.  As you enter, you must turn left (west) for about 2/10 mile to Blackhawk Trace.  Turn north and proceed 2 miles to West Wachter Rd, then turn east.  Proceed on W. Wachter for.4 mile to North Brodecht Rd and turn south.  Proceed 1.1 miles to Heatherdown Ln and turn west.  Follow this road for about a mile and the school will be on the right/north side, sitting well back from the road. (Be careful because just before it gets to the school, Heatherdown Ln turns left - straight is Deer Hollow Run.)  There is a sign just prior to the school, with a trail to follow back to it.  This is also the easiest way when arriving from east of Galena on U.S. 20 from Elizabeth.
